Lahore Qalandars is one of the two most expensive franchises sold in Pakistan Super League, purchased by Qatar Oil Company for 2.5 million US dollars on 12th Dec in Lahore. It was the first franchise of PSL T20 who announced their name “Lahore Qalandars”, according to the owners word “Qalandar” will reflect Lahore’s tradition, Qatar & their company QALCO.
11 national and 5 overseas players have been included in Lahore Qalandars’ squad which includes the Iconic player and the mighty hitter Chris Gayle from West Indies who is most likely to be the side’s captain, Pakistan T20 batsman Umer Akmal, Dwayne Bravo another West Indian all rounder and an experienced T20 player, the third West Indies player Kevon Cooper, Cameron Delport from South Africa. The rest of the squad doesn’t look promising with Mohammad Rizwan, Yasir Shah, Sohaib Maqsood, Mustafizur Rehman from Bangladesh, Zafar Gohar, Hammad Azam, Zia-ul-Haq, Zohaib Khan, Azhar Ali, Naved Yasin, Adnan Rasool.
Lahore Qalandars are the only franchise with four supplementary players Abdul Razzaq, Mukhtar Ahmad, Ehsan Adil, Imran Butt.
In the coaching staff Paddy Upton from South African has been appointed as the head coach. He is a former test cricketer and has a massive coaching experience. He has been incharge with many T20 league teams. Ijaz Ahmed former Pakistani test cricketer will be serving as batting coach of Lahore Qalandars while Shahid Aslam has been picked up as team’s assistant coach.
The side has a strong batting department with Chris Gayle, Umar Akmal, Dwayne Bravo and Cameron Delport and in the middle order Azhar Ali and Sohaib Maqsood, however their pace bowling attack doesn’t seems much attacking as Lahore Qalandars’ squad is more depending on spinners like Yasir Shah. Lahore Qalandars is the only franchise who picked more local young talent.
Their first opening match will be against rivals Karachi Kings on 5th February, 2016.
